Shore Dive Records have been releasing quality records for a few years now from their Brighton base in the UK. Release number fifty-one for the label comes from the Californian band, The Know.
The Know are a dream pop band from Los Angeles, comprised of the husband and wife duo, Daniel Knowles and Jennifer Farmer. In late 2018 Knowles suggested to Farmer that instead of traveling home for the holidays (to the UK and Texas respectively) that they stay put and try to create music together, just the two of them. This would be the married couple’s gift to themselves.
For the next few weeks, they isolated themselves in their home studio with no real plan except a mutual love of Beach House, Julee Cruise, Ye Ye, The Jesus and Mary Chain, sixties girl groups, and the evocative storytelling lyricism of Patsy Cline and The National.
The result was their debut EP wearetheknow from which they have released their first single.
‘143’ is a glittering slow dance of a song. Jennifer’s gentle vocal floats above a dreamy ever evolving soundtrack. From the futuristic electronica in the verses we swing to a sixties Spector-like wall of sound in the chorus. Even down to the glorious key change at the end this is a very clever track. “Weekends are all I ever wanna do” is a feeling, I think, we can all get behind.
If this is anything to go by the EP itself will be a treat for the ears.
