It’s that time again when we dust of those Christmas playlists for another year. I was looking to add something new to mine and as if by magic this dropped into my inbox.
Sonic Cathedral are releasing the Winterland EP from Mark Peters. It combines his cover theme tune to the eighties kids’ TV series ‘The Box Of Delights’ along with a reworking by Maps.
Also included are versions of ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ that he put out over the last two years to raise money for charity.
‘The Box of Delights’ is itself a reworking of ’The First Noel’ and in Mark Peters hands it has been twisted into something both ominous and uplifting. It could almost have come from the soundtrack to the Exorcist. The reworking by Mercury Prize nominees Maps couldn’t be more different. Eschewing the darkness for light and magic it absolutely captures the celebratory feel of the season.
The Winterland EP will be available on all digital and streaming platforms from Tuesday December 17th 2019. ‘The Box of Delights’ is also being pressed as a seven-inch single and will form Decembers offering for the Sonic Cathedral singles club. Don’t fret if you are not a member as a very limited amount will be made available via Sonic Cathedrals website and a few selected record shops.
