L-space are back with a new double A-side single. After 2019 SAY nominated debut album Kipple Arcadia and the sprawling luxury of Music for Megastructures comes ‘I Never Knew’ and ‘Tigers in the Street’. These tracks were recorded last autumn in France with producer James Sanger who has worked with such artists as Madonna, Manic Street Preachers and The Cure.
‘I Never Knew’ is a development of the sounds of Kipple Arcadia. Lily’s voice now more powerful and front and centre demanding your attention. The synth sounds remain edgy, other worldly and tantalisingly defy description. Especially in the closing section where it almost turns on its head and becomes a Radiohead song before pulling the rug from under you. This is a band in top form and enjoying themselves. The video was shot around Glasgow and you can watch it below.
In stark contrast ‘Tigers in the Street’ is a ballad with real pop appeal. The vocal line seems to float along on the subtle and comforting synth lines in the verses before exploding into a joyous technicolour chorus. The synth lines made me smile throughout. I love how deceptively simple they have made them sound when they are anything but. The video is a play on a platform video game and you can see it below.
