Annie Booth – Spectral EP

Its been nearly two years since I had the pleasure of reviewing Annie Booth’s stunning debut LP An Unforgiving Light.

That was an incredibly bold and confident recording that really struck a chord with me. It showcased a songwriter at home in her craft and deftly exploring every dynamic her compositions presented.

With numerous live appearances now under her belt in support of that album she is back with some new songs for us. Today I find myself once again entranced by Annie’s latest release, the Spectral EP.

This four-song gem demonstrates how Annie’s song writing and arranging has grown and developed in such a short space of time.

Opener ‘Magic 8’ shows that even when it’s just her voice and guitar she can fill the entire song and inhabit every moment. The same can be said for ‘Mirage’ which follows. With only the lightest of instrumentation to back her, you can hear her heart and soul from the speakers.

Over on side B ‘Still’ starts proceedings. For me this is not only the EP highlight but Annie’s finest song to date. It’s a piano led ballad that carries you along on an ebbing and flowing wave of her heartfelt narration. Closing the EP is ‘Spiralling’ aptly with the line “this is how we begin and end” sang to the close of the song.

The Spectral EP works well as group of tracks, these songs live together and compliment each other beautifully.

The Spectral EP is out on Last Night from Glasgow and Scottish Fiction on 10th May 2019.
