Armstrong – Hard Rock Cafe, Glasgow – 08/04/15

armstrong-hard-rock-cafe-glasgow-08-april-15-2We’ve been keeping an eye on promising young indie-poppers Armstrong since the release of their first single ‘Just Cause‘ back in January. When we found out they were going to be the headline act of the Hard Rock Cafe Glasgow’s midweek showcase of local talent, we decided to head along to see how they’re getting on.

From the beginning of their seven track set it was clear they were happiest up onstage doing what they do. Nicole is a natural frontwoman and you could see the confidence – which she has in abundance – was building as she was feeding off the energy provided by the crowd as they became more vocal.

Among the newer tracks ‘Icarus’ and set closer ‘Thunderkick’ we were treated to a live rendition of others which are available on the band’s Soundcloud page. Highlights were ‘Just Cause’ which is a pop-friendly, infectious track that got the place moving. ‘Bend. Buckle. Break.’ was a clear favourite with the home support (who’d come along to see their friends rock the rafters of the Hard Rock Cafe) offering raucous support from the floor.

Unfortunately, beside the fact that this band is talented and has very clear and present potential to become kings – and queen – of their genre, there were a couple of sound issues. Rhythm guitar and bass seemed to meld a little and at times the vocal was off-key, perhaps due to the fact Nicole’s in-ear monitors were causing her bother; this much was obvious. These little problems didn’t detract too much from the overall performance and it was easy to see past it.

I won’t hesitate to go along to their next outing as it was an enjoyable evening rounded off with a band who look very much at home onstage, producing catchy songs that you can bop along to.
