Straight out of Austin, Texas come Ringo Deathstarr. Returning after a five-year gap since their last album, Pure Mood, with a self-titled double album due for release very soon. The band remain at the vanguard of the shoegaze revival and are undoubtedly one of the most popular bands on the scene today. With all the excitement about the new album being announced we were dying to find out what direction they had gone with their sound.
The answer came this week as the band released a track from the album called ‘God Help the Ones You Love’. The intro kicks in like an early song from The Cure. Alex Gehring’s ethereal vocals drawing comparisons to old school gazers like Liz Frazer and Miki Berenyi of Cocteau Twins and Lush respectively.
It’s when the song explodes into the chorus that we get hints of Medicine and Jesus and Mary Chain from Elliott Frazier’s dynamic guitar playing.
If this is any indication then Ringo Deathstarr are pulling no punches and are connecting on a very emotional level with their lyrics. This album was recorded during a very difficult time for the band and you can really hear that in this track.
