Van Susans – Seagulls

van-susans-seagulls-single-coverLondon-based band Van Susans have released their new single ‘Seagulls’ with a magnificently poignant video promo.

The gravely emotional vocal combined with a video interspersed with family home movies is guaranteed to bring a lump to your throat. The low-key start belies the power of the orchestration; the big sound and the catchy hook are the cherry on the bun.

Front man, Olly Andrews, lost his father three years ago and he really bares his soul on this track. The treatment of this sensitive subject could have easily degenerated into pathos and melodrama but grown-up song writing and an inspired video becomes a rage at the unfairness of death and a celebration of a life lived.

This is a beautifully crafted song with hints of anthem about it, it’s my first introduction to the Van Susans and I think I’m a fan already.

The video promo is below, keep your tissues handy.
