It’s not quite the crossover rap/rock I was initially expecting, but I like it a lot. He’s been compared heavily to Nas, to such an extent that before Droog made himself known the rumours were that it was Nas releasing under an assumed name. Droog, it turns out, is a 25-year-old Ukrainian/American.
For the most part, this is deep, dark moody collection of tracks. The rock influence comes in lyrically with it being almost impossible to keep track of all the name checks. Metallica, The Misfits, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More and even Shirley Manson get shoutouts. As well, we have songs named after Porno For Pyros, Sonic Youth and there’s ‘Rage Against the Machine’ chronicling Droog’s appreciation of the band.
Lyrically sharp and clever, with some fantastic basslines and outstanding delivery, this is well worth a listen. Check it out below.
