A bit of a change of pace for me last night as I went from Black Sabbath at Hyde Park to the ABC in Glasgow to catch country star Kacey Musgraves. Riding high on the success of last year’s Same Trailer, Different Park album, which made it into my top 10 albums of 2013, I was really keen to see how she would do playing to near-full Glasgow crowd.
Coming on to a stage (which featured neon cacti) to Ennio Morricone’s ‘The Good, The Bad & The Ugly’ theme she received a rapturous welcome. Kicking off with four tracks from the afore-mentioned break-out album, including ‘Blowin’ Smoke’, Kacey set the bar high. Unlike it’s sister venue, the Academy, the ABC sounded brilliant as usual and between Kacey and her 5-piece backing band there were plenty of switches from guitars to banjos, keyboards and ukuleles. Above it all, Kacey’s vocals were clear and sweet with the country-tinge you would expect from someone signed to the Mercury Nashville label.
She played 3 new songs that should feature on her upcoming album she hopes to record in the autumn. The first of these, ‘High Times’, came next before a cracking cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘Here You Come Again’ which got the enthusiastic crowd singing and clapping along. This was the first of half a dozen covers, including an interesting countrified take on TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ and a great version of ‘Three Little Birds’ coming out of a great rendition of ‘Step Off’. The main set closed with Kacey’s biggest hit single, ‘Merry Go Round’ and then ‘My House’.
Coming out for an encore that kicked off with an acoustic version of new song, ‘Cup of Tea’, it really came to life during an outstanding version of ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’. Next was the rather twee, but sweet, ‘Follow Your Arrow’, with a huge crowd sing-along in the last chorus and she finished up by getting the full band to the front of the stage for an acapella version of ‘Happy Trails’. Here’s hoping it won’t be long before Kacey and Glasgow meet again.
